  • HTTPS
  • Mobile Friendliness
  • User Experiences
  • Page Speed
  • Content Accuracy
  • Freshness
  • Topical Authority
  • Content Depth
  • Search Intent
  • Backlinks

1. HTTPS:

Google has confirmed the use of HTTPS as a ranking signal (Lightweight ranking factor as confirmed by John Muller in early 2019). HTTPs improves security for visitors, it encrypts data between user and browser.

If your website is not secured, you may receive a warning message in Google Search Console

2. Mobile Friendliness:

Nearly 65% of searches come from mobile, Google made mobile friendliness as a ranking factor for mobile searches in 2015.

Later in july 2019, Google moved to mobile first indexing and made it a ranking factor for desktop searches too. Make sure your websites all pages are mobile friendly.

3. User Experiences:

Google helps to rank content which has better user experiences.

Google announced that web pages using intrusive interstitial pop ups might not get higher rank.

Things to focus for good user experiences:

  • Make easy to read content
  • Build organized site
  • Create useful content
  • Use Responsive website design
  • No intrusive pop ups
  • Ease website navigation

Google may consider website experiences measured by user satisfaction as Click through Rate (CTR), Avg Time on Page, and Bounce Rate.

Still no one knows, How google measures user satisfaction, don’t chase with competitors ideas, play with metrics which have to follow to rank better keywords in search engines.

4. Page Speed:

Web page speed is the ranking factor since 2010 for desktop searches and in 2018 extended the ranking factor for mobile searches.

Don’t try to beat the competitors, Try to load faster your web page by a few seconds.

How fast do I need to load?

Google said in 2018, the mobile page should load content and images to user under 3 seconds (must be 1.3 seconds).

If your mobile web page is less than 500KB, that makes your website load faster.

Google Search Console Tool helps to check your website page speed.

5. Content Accuracy:

Only aim to rank accurate results for every query.

For example – Search for the keyword “who is founder of microsoft” and 1st search result shows about

Content accuracy is most important for Money and life related queries, Google says those type of keywords are most impact for future happiness, health or wealth of users.

Another example – Keyword “aspirin dosage”

If Google were to rank inaccurate results for the keyword, it may be inconvenient for users and dangerous.

So google makes sure to deliver accurate results for every search query.

How does google plan?

First one is back-links, No body try to link with irrelevant pages for their search query (aspirin dosage).

Nowadays google uses knowledge graph data, which is an essential base of interconnected data points about people, things and other entities.

6. Freshness:

It is a search query dependent ranking factor. Its more important for some queries (News, Price , E-commerce things and more).

For Example – World News (Search Query)

News are super fresh queries and google likes to display “top stories” feature with the result from recent news updates (Past few hours).

How often the page has been updated over a time? As Daily or Weekly or Monthly or over a year.

The significance page updates (Edits or Changes) in content also serves as freshness. Although google denied that they use publishing frequency in their algorithm as a freshness ranking factor.

Sometimes google knows, is good to display results for search queries that are a few months old.

For Example – For a query like How to tie a tie – Freshness is always a matters but the process of tying a tie never changes, a few months older guide or videos be as good as new one to display in search results.

7. Topical Authority:

Google wants to rank pages from authoritative sources like quality backlinks.

In more details!

Check for results “Cast Iron Seasoning”

Above example figure out why those 1st two results came up rather than third. Both results have low backlinks, lower UR scores, domain ranking and live on lower authority websites.

But if I look at the sites, it makes more sense…

In above results, if you look over third position, that is general cooking blog and covers about cast iron cleaning lessons , where top two positions are about cast iron seasoning.

Here they stood up top because of “topical authority”

Google’s search quality rater guidelines mention E-A-T stands for Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness.

Important Note – E-A-T is not a direct ranking factor but google’s algorithms are designed to rank the pages that demonstrate E-A-T.

Keep focus on keywords tightly, not roughly focus everything for content, it may have a bad impact on search engine rankings.

8. Content Depth:

Google wants to rank the content which is most useful for the search query. Better create content to cover everything under the focus keyword is the only key factor.

However, it isn’t about content length. Quality of content matters.

Content has to open up what searchers are looking for and what is important for searchers.

For Example: “Best watch brands”

Above here clearly from analyzing search intent that users are looking for luxury and branded watches.

In the 1st search result, clearly mentioned about new luxury watches with prices and searchers clearly come up to market with particular brands and their budget amount.

This makes sense.

First and second, they look at luxury branded watches and prices. Third, they check technical specifications and features.

If you want to rank for the above query, you have to cover all those things and you can get ideas from the “People also ask” and “Related Searchers” to find what matters for searchers.

Tip – Take a note from top ranking pages to create informative content and research about search questions and find the answers what searchers want and include all those in content.

9. Search Intent:

Google doesn’t rank for the same type of content for every query.

Example – “buy dresses online”

Users want to see the products that they can buy and the search result page shows ecommerce category pages.

Another example, if you’re searching for the query “how to tie a tie” – It is a learning mode not buying one. That’s why google displays search results as Blog Post (How to tie a tie).
